Mit dem Abteufen der beiden Schächte der Zeche Wulfen begann die Mathias Stinnes AG 1957. Die Endteufen wurden 1962 erreicht. 1970 kam es zum Zusammenschluss mit der Zeche Leopold zum neuen Bergwerk Fürst Leopold / Wulfen. 1981 wurde nach Fertigstellung einer untertägigen Förderverbindung zu Fürst Leopold die Kohleförderung in Wulfen eingestellt.
Für die Ansiedlung der erforderlichen Belegschaft und der Beschäftigten der mit dem Bergbau verbundenen Betriebe war die ”Neue Stadt Wulfen” vorgesehen. Ursprünglich für 60.000 Menschen geplant, hat Wulfen-Barkenberg heute 10.000 Einwohner.
