Der Spiegel schreibt 1962:

Entstehung

Mit dem Abteufen der beiden Schächte der Zeche Wulfen begann die Mathias Stinnes AG 1957. Die Endteufen wurden 1962 erreicht. 1970 kam es zum Zusammenschluss mit der Zeche Leopold zum neuen Bergwerk Fürst Leopold / Wulfen. 1981 wurde nach Fertigstellung einer untertägigen Förderverbindung zu Fürst Leopold die Kohleförderung in Wulfen eingestellt.

Der Spiegel schreibt 1962:

„Über die Misere der letzten Jahre und die Zukunftsaussichten der Stinnesschen Kohlengruben gibt das Schicksal der neuen Schachtanlage Wulfen im nördlichen Ruhrrevier Aufschluß. Dort wurden auf der grünen Wiese für 60 Millionen Mark zwei Schächte bis in eine Tiefe von mehr als tausend Meter niedergebracht. Jetzt, da das Kohlefeld erschlossen ist, leidet die Branche Absatznöte. Der Aufsichtsratsvorsitzende der Hugo Stinnes AG, Franz Heinrich Ulrich, gab deshalb für die Wulfen -Schächte die Order: "Deckel drauf!" Ulrich, im Hauptberuf Vorstandsmitglied der Deutschen Bank AG, erklärte: "Wulfen wartet auf bessere Zeiten. Vielleicht kommt auch einer, der uns die Anlage abkauft. Wer weiß?" “
